Overview

tobbli is a studio workspace I designed and built for freelancers and small studios. Clients, projects, time, expenses, and invoicing live in one signed-in app, so the invoice is the last step of the work rather than a separate tool.

Alongside the product I built the marketing site at tobbli.com. The app is shaped for European billing: VAT, Kleinunternehmer under § 19 UStG, reverse charge, ZUGFeRD / Factur-X, XRechnung, and a SEPA payment QR on euro invoices. The interface and each document can run in ten languages.

The Challenge

Freelancers usually split the same job across a timer, a spreadsheet, and an invoicing tool built for a different country. The hard part was keeping that whole path in one place — from unbilled hours to a sent invoice — without turning the product into a second accounting suite.

German and EU invoicing adds rules that generic tools treat as an afterthought: tax modes, documents that lock after send, credit notes, and machine-readable e-invoices that have to validate before they go out. The interface still had to feel calm enough for someone invoicing between client calls.

Key Features

A workspace where the work and the invoice stay in the same place.

Invoices, quotes & credit notes
One editor for line items, a service catalog, tax, and a live split preview. Sent invoices lock. A client can accept a quote, and that acceptance becomes a draft invoice. Credit notes correct what was already sent.
Time & expenses
A live timer in the sidebar, manual entries, and expenses with receipts. Unbilled hours and billable costs become invoice lines when it is time to bill.
Projects
Optional projects under a client, with an hours budget and a fee cap, so time, expenses, and documents stay grouped around the same piece of work.
European e-invoicing
VAT, Kleinunternehmer, and reverse charge on the document itself. ZUGFeRD or XRechnung goes out with the send, and euro invoices can include an EPC payment QR.
Client portal
Clients get a private login for their invoices, quotes, and shared files, or a hosted link that needs no account. They can accept or decline a quote from either place.
Dashboard
Invoiced, collected, and outstanding stay in each currency, with paid, open, and overdue in one view. Quotes never count as revenue.

Results

tobbli is live at tobbli.com, with the product at app.tobbli.com. Freelancers can run clients, time, and invoices in one workspace, including the e-invoice formats German and EU clients expect.

Building it end to end — product, billing rules, and the marketing site — was a chance to design a full application around a workflow I know from freelance work, from the first timer start to the PDF that goes out the door.
